Isolation and Online contact

In these isolated times, when most of our Wavelength group are 'self-isolating', contacting family and friends online is becoming an essential, rather than an optional extra. Fortunately, there are some 80,000 'videoconferencing tools' available.  I've narrowed it down to just a few. WhatsApp, Skype, Facetime, Zoom, and Houseparty. I've precised  some information available online.  If you would like some help setting up any of these, do contact us via WhatsApp.  We also have some tablets available for loan. WhatsApp (owned and run by Facebook) You have it on your phone, probably, and it is relatively easy to start a 'call' (voice only) or a 'video call' (voice and picture).  Downside is that you can't get it on your PC on a big screen. You can do a group video call with up to 3 other people, or start with 2 and INVITE another etc. Skype (owned and run by Microsoft) It is available to download on your PC (you need a camera and m...

SatNav Apps

Google Maps great and does everything, including public transport and walking and cycling routes. Waze very similar.  There are some differences but they both seem to do the same. (Since they are both free, why not install both and try them out, then uninstall the one you prefer less.) Google Driving  (which I've used for years). That's the problem, they keep updating and renaming their products, so this is no longer available!!  Use one of the above instead. Google Maps Go I only discovered this today when we were in session.  It is specifically designed for phones 'less powerful'.  If you've got an older phone.  Doesn't, from what I've read, do turn by turn navigation, so not as useful as the others. Conclusion (my personal opinion) Stick with Google Maps , or if you want to try something different, Waze . Don't forget that they will all use your DATA allowance from your phone company when you are out of wifi range (i.e. driving!!)

Devices

We all using multiple devices, of different sizes and features, and different 'user experience' (or 'Operating System' = OS). If you're used to Windows 10, and are handed an iPhone, the major difference is the OS (Operating System) - Windows is not like Apple iOS. I've tried to clarify the main differences. Desktop the name says it.  It sits on your desk and is not portable. PROS Very versatile Uses mouse and keyboard BIG screen if required Easily expandable space CONS NOT portable.  It stays where it is! Laptop Portable version of the desktop PROS Can be as versatile as a desktop, apart from the screen size CONS need to watch battery life expensive to repair a cracked screen, or failing battery (Hybrid or 2-in-1) between a laptop and tablet Has keyboard, but also a touch screen, and sometimes a sophisticated hinge mechanism, so you can use it as a laptop, or touch screen tablet) Tablet Typically, has a touch screen but ...
