We all using multiple devices, of different sizes and features, and different 'user experience' (or 'Operating System' = OS).
If you're used to Windows 10, and are handed an iPhone, the major difference is the OS (Operating System) - Windows is not like Apple iOS.
I've tried to clarify the main differences.

- Desktop
- the name says it. It sits on your desk and is not portable.
- PROS
- Very versatile
- Uses mouse and keyboard
- BIG screen if required
- Easily expandable space
- CONS
- NOT portable. It stays where it is!
- Laptop
- Portable version of the desktop
- PROS
- Can be as versatile as a desktop, apart from the screen size
- CONS
- need to watch battery life
- expensive to repair a cracked screen, or failing battery
- (Hybrid or 2-in-1)
- between a laptop and tablet
- Has keyboard, but also a touch screen, and sometimes a sophisticated hinge mechanism, so you can use it as a laptop, or touch screen tablet)
- Tablet
- Typically, has a touch screen but no keyboard or mouse.
- Size can vary from 8" upwards.
- If you're used to a desktop or laptop, there is a learning curve to touch screen and keyboard, and lots of screen icons.
- PROS
- Very portable
- Long battery life
- Quick switch on
- CONS
- Not as versatile as desktop or laptop
- Smart Phone
- Phone trying to be a computer
- Does both, but on a small touch screen
- PROS
- Can fit in the pocket or handbag (though manufacturers are beginning to produce bigger and bigger versions, to cram more features on the screen)
- Can make phone calls!
